What makes Halftone Co different from other photographers?
Honestly, I'm not that photographer who gets stressed when something goes off script. I do modern portraits with a relaxed approach, light direction when it helps, and zero pressure to perform. If something changes on the day, we roll with it.
Who do you shoot for?
Couples, bands, individuals, and event hosts mostly. If you want modern images without the stiff, overly formal vibe that a lot of photographers bring, you're in the right place.
What's it actually like working with Halftone Co?
Low-key and low-pressure. I give clear direction when it counts, stay flexible when things shift, and keep the energy on set calm. Most people say it feels easier than they expected.
Is Halftone Co inclusive?
Without question. Everyone who walks in front of my camera deserves to feel respected and comfortable, full stop. I don't care who you are, who you love, or what you look like. Halftone Co is proudly LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming to all.
Do you shoot bands and touring musicians?
Yeah, 200+ band sets and counting. I mix sound for a few bands in town, including two of my own, so I know how fast things move at a show or on the road, and I shoot to match that energy while still walking away with images that look sharp and intentional.
Can you recommend locations for a shoot?
Yeah, I have a solid list of go-to spots around Champaign-Urbana depending on the vibe you're after. Downtown Champaign has great alleys and walls for something more urban and editorial. The UI Arboretum and Japan House are great for something greener and more natural. Meadowbrook Park works well for golden hour. I've also lived in Central IL for most of my life, so I know areas around Champaign/Urbana, Decatur, Springfield, Bloomington/Normal, and everywhere in-between pretty well too. And of course, If you have something specific in mind though, bring it up and we'll figure it out together. I'm flexible and always open to ideas.
Why is it called 'halftone co.?'
Keeping it real with you, I just thought it sounded cool.
Do you offer film photography?
Yes, film is available as an add-on to any digital session. I have extensive experience with film and a large collection of cameras to pull from, and I work closely with a film lab I used to manage before starting Halftone Co., so the process is as dialed in as it gets. That said, film is unpredictable by nature. Even the most experienced film photographer in the world can end up with a blank roll, and that's just the reality of the medium. Offering it as an add-on to digital means you always walk away with something from your session no matter what. The film is a bonus, not a gamble.
What if I'm not photogenic?
Everyone is photogenic.
Do you do passport photos?
No. I promise you going to Fedex is not only better but much easier for both you and I. Passport photos have insane specifications, and those all change per country as well. I normally recommend the Fedex store, but you can also get this done at Walgreens, CVS, and the Post Office as well.
Do you offer sponsorships or work for exposure?
Short answer on the exposure thing: photography is how I pay my bills, so free work isn't really on the table. That said, I'm always open to discussing volunteering for the right cause because some things are just worth showing up for. On the sponsorship side, I don't typically contribute financially, but I'm happy to discuss offering photography services in trade for a sponsorship shout out at your event.
